Energy-aware scheduling with reconstruction and frequency equalization on heterogeneous systems

Yong-xing LIU,Ken-li LI,Zhuo TANG,Ke-qin LI

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 7,   Pages 519-531 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400399

Abstract: With the increasing energy consumption of computing systems and the growing advocacy for green computing, energy efficiency has become one of the critical challenges in high-performance heterogeneous computing systems. Energy consumption can be reduced by not only hardware design but also software design. In this paper, we propose an energy-aware scheduling algorithm with equalized frequency, called EASEF, for parallel applications on heterogeneous computing systems. The EASEF approach aims to minimize the finish time and overall energy consumption. First, EASEF extracts the set of paths from an application. Then, it reconstructs the application based on the extracted set of paths to achieve a reasonable schedule. Finally, it adopts a progressive way to equalize the frequency of tasks to reduce the total energy consumption of systems. Randomly generated applications and two real-world applications are examined in our experiments. Experimental results show that the EASEF algorithm outperforms two existing algorithms in terms of makespan and energy consumption.

Scaling up of cluster beam deposition technology for catalysis application

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2021, Volume 15, Issue 6,   Pages 1360-1379 doi: 10.1007/s11705-021-2101-7

Abstract: Many research works have demonstrated that the combination of atomically precise cluster deposition and theoretical calculations is able to address fundamental aspects of size-effects, cluster-support interactions, and reaction mechanisms of cluster materials. Although the wet chemistry method has been widely used to synthesize nanoparticles, the gas-phase synthesis and size-selected strategy was the only method to prepare supported metal clusters with precise numbers of atoms for a long time. However, the low throughput of the physical synthesis method has severely constrained its wider adoption for catalysis applications. In this review, we introduce the latest progress on three types of cluster source which have the most promising potential for scale-up, including sputtering gas aggregation source, pulsed microplasma cluster source, and matrix assembly cluster source. While the sputtering gas aggregation source is leading ahead with a production rate of ~20 mg·h–1, the pulsed microplasma source has the smallest physical dimensions which makes it possible to compact multiple such devices into a small volume for multiplied production rate. The matrix assembly source has the shortest development history, but already show an impressive deposition rate of ~10 mg·h–1. At the end of the review, the possible routes for further throughput scale-up are envisaged.

Abstract: es (LVEAs) have many workpieces and intricate geometric structures, and the assembly process is rigid and labor-intensive, and has little balance. The assembly process cannot readily adapt to changes in assembly situations. To address these issues, a is proposed. Based on the requirements of , a colored Petri net (CPN) model is proposed to analyze the performance of the interaction and self-government of robots in . Also, an algorithm (AFPA) is presented to realize the assembly planning and of robots in the of LVEAs. Then an (AQGA) is developed to optimize the assembly process. Lastly, taking a two-pole circuit-breaker controller with leakage protection (TPCLP) as an assembly instance, comparative results show that the is cost-effective and flexible in LVEA assembly. The distribution of resources can also be optimized in the assembly. The assembly robots can interact dynamically with each other to accommodate changes that may occur in the LVEA assembly.
